In my years as a photographer and videographer, I think that
this question rests on the minds of brides or event coordinators. Rather
deeper, I think that there is an expectation that people place on the value of
each of these services for your wedding or event. Because of this expectation,
I definitely think that it needs some clarification.
So in terms of allocating budget, where should you place your funds for photo and video? How do you even decide?
It has been our experience that the vast majority of brides
think and feel that they need to spend more money on a photographer than a
videographer. Where did this expectation come from? My thought is that it comes
mostly from previous generations and their value and position of wedding video.
Wedding video in the 90’s obtained and for the most part retained this imprint
of being cheap, home video like, and low quality when placed in comparison with
their photos.
With the impression of wedding video being so cheap by
comparison to wedding photography, it is not a wonder why people don’t feel
that they would ever pay more for wedding video in comparison to wedding
photography. As we have seen the landscape of wedding video evolve over the
years, it has become even more apparent that there has been a change happening.
The Work
There. I said it. Video is flat out, plain and simple, more
work than photography. I say this from my experience as both a photographer and
videographer. The day of, you are not just focused on getting good shots, you
have to focus on Audio and have a vision in your head of how you want to piece
together the video and shoot to that vision. While composing and shooting you
need to stay in focus with each of your shots, continuously. This is moving
photography.
Post Production
Alongside the work that you have to do the day of, the vast
majority of the work is done in post-production, that is piecing the film
together. In photography, you cull your images and then apply your color
correcting. With video, you pass through your footage and find usable clips for
your video. You find commercial free music for your video. You purchase said
commercial free music license for your video. You cut your video together with
the music you chose. You creatively layout the audio to narrate your story. You
then color correct your clips. Then you color grade your clips. Then you add
text and titles. Then you clean up your audio if it needs cleaning up. All of
these steps to produce a solid film that stands the test of time and
emotionally blows away your client. This process and often take 2-3 times as
long as the photography process.
Why is a good quality film more expensive than good quality
photography? You are looking at an investment in a visual creation of your
